The US air force will receive a heavily armed version of the F-15 in 2022

The U.S. air force will receive the first heavily armed version of the F-15 — F-15EX — in the second quarter of 2021 fiscal year (first quarter of 2022). According to the message of the U.S. air force, the military signed a contract for the delivery of the first batch of eight new aircraft, which involved the development of American aircraft building concern Boeing.

Fighter-bombers F-15 Strike Eagle entered service with the USAF in the late 1980-ies. They were developed on the basis of fighter superiority in the air F-15 Eagle, taken into service in the mid 1970-ies. Recent purchases of the F-15 was produced by the US air force in 2001. Part of the standing armed U.S. military aircraft has become obsolete and requires replacement.

Currently in the US there is no alternative to a heavy fighter F-15 — new combat aircraft of this class had not been developed due to the fact that a significant portion of the budgets for delayed projects of F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II. Project F-15EX was proposed by the United States air force as a relatively cheap and quick way to add a heavy front-line aircraft new aircraft.

In total, the U.S. air force intend to acquire a 76 F-15EX, spending a total of $ 23 billion. Under the agreement with Boeing, the first two aircraft, the military will have in 2021 fiscal year, and the remaining six will be delivered to the U.S. air force in 2023 fiscal year (begins October 1, 2022). In the 2021 fiscal year, the military will purchase 12 new fighter jets.

Boeing presented the project of modernization of the fighter-bomber F-15 in the summer of 2018. Strike Eagle is armed with 20-mm aircraft six-barreled M61A1 Vulcan cannon with ammunition to 500 rounds and is also equipped with underwing and ventral pylons for the suspension of various missile and bomb armament with a total weight of 10.4 tons.
