To burn, to drown, to soak up or eat

3 June in Krasnoyarsk region has declared an emergency of Federal scale. June 5, five kilometers from the confluence of the river Barn, on the waters which accounted for the majority of pollution in the lake Pyasino mounted booms to over nailed the oil along the boom to the shore where rescuers pumps pumping water-oil emulsion.

“In the first days to catch as much as possible to collect, otherwise it will be too late — says the program Manager for environmental responsibility WWF of Alexey Knizhnikov. Diesel fuel evaporates fairly quickly, and there through the week and so little will remain on the water.”

According to various estimates, from spilled fuel is collected only a few hundred tons, is one-thousandth of the total leakage.

Spills of oil and oil products on water surfaces, in addition to the mechanical fee, to eliminate the effects of used a wide range of methods. Among them burning, chemical dispersants and sorbents, natural sorbents from husk and sawdust, as well as fungi and bacteria.

Burn and pump

Now on a place of accident of diesel fuel from the rivers is pumped mechanically. For this purpose, pumps, skimmers (from English skim, “slither”/”remove skin”), which “rake” the top layer of water and it is pumped to individual tanks. But mechanical means rarely allow to collect more than 20% of spilled water, oil or fuel.

A few days ago the Governor of Krasnoyarsk region dropped a phrase that “thermal recycling is the only possible way as quickly as possible to complete the liquidation”. Then Rosprirodnadzor assuredthat burn the fuel in Norilsk will not — but the spilled oil do sometimes burn: for example, did when the oil spill after the accident of the tanker Torrey Canyon in 1967 and the accident of the Exxon Valdez off Alaska in 1989.

The Assembly with the pumps and burning effective at first, when the film on the water surface is thick enough: estimates range from three millimeters to several centimeters. When the film is thinner, the Assembly with the pumps become inefficient and uneconomical, and the ignition — physically impossible due to the cooling effect of water.
